Event: Building Peace through Cooperative, Inclusive, and Sustainable “Climate-Security” Practices

On February 1-4 2022, The Environmental Peacebuilding Association (EnPAx) and the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies (IHEID) will be organizing the second International Conference on Environmental Peacebuilding, which will take place virtually. The conference is convened in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP),  the Geneva Peacebuilding Platform, the Geneva Water Hub, the Geneva Environment Network, and the PeaceNexus Foundation.

During the conference, PSI’s Louise van Schaik, Clingendael’s Head of Unit EU & Global Affairs, will be speaking on the role of militaries as an enabler of environmental peacebuilding. Military organisations are increasingly interested in the climate-security agenda, but their potential contribution is viewed with caution. Whereas the military can lower its own carbon and resource footprint in theatres of operation, the contribution of the military to environmental peacebuilding efforts is less clear. During her talk, Van Schaik will focus on the potential role of military missions by the EU, NATO and the UN in enabling other (civilian actors) in the space of environmental peacebuilding. The talk will take place during the session ‘Building Peace through Cooperative, Inclusive, and Sustainable “Climate-Security” Practices’. During this session, the panel will discuss opportunities for environmental peacebuilding through tackling climate security risks. The session will be moderated by Geoff Dabelko of Ohio University (United States) and will take place on 2 February, from 17:00 to 18:30 CET.

Registration is possible through this link. See the agenda here
