2018 Global Report on Food Crises points to climate change as persistent drivers

This report on food crises gives estimates of the level of severe hunger faced by various countries in the world. Last year, conflict and extreme climate events have been the main drivers of food shocks. The short term estimate for 2018 suggests that conflict and enduring weather conditions will continue to contribute to the acute food crises in many regions.

New milestones for climate in UN Security Council

The upcoming German non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council in 2019 and 2020 should follow the path already established by the Netherlands and Sweden thus maintaining climate security on the agenda. Other developments happened with a new resolution on AMISOM, the UNSC mandated AU mission in Somali, a new Presidential Statement by the Security Council on the UNOWAS mandate and the Pacific Island Forum issued a presidential statement for the appointment of a special envoy for climate security at the General-Secretariat.

New climate committee in the Netherlands lead by Ban Ki-Moon

On the initiative of the Netherlands, a new international climate committee will start next month. This “Global Commission on Adaptation” will be dedicated to convince countries worldwide to face and adapt to the consequences of climate change. The Minister, Cora van Nieuwenhuizen, announced that former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon, Bill Gates, and the World Bank CEO Kristalina Georgieva will lead this committee.

Responding to climate-related security risks: Are regional organizations in Asia and Africa ready?

The transnational character of climate-related security risks often goes beyond the capacity of national governments to respond adequately. A newly published study by SIPRI shows that, in various ways, climate-related security risks have found their way into the policy frameworks and institutional discourse of many regional institutions.
